After picking up the groceries, they spent the rest of the day working on a timeline. She’d pulled out an old whiteboard and markers to use. She always did better with a big visual. Since neither of them were from Hawaii, they called on Adam. After a long conversation with him, he gave up and showed up around three to help. With calls to more than one auntie, they put together a timeline of things that had been going on in Hawaii at the time.

“Okay, now we know all of this, what do we do with it?” Adam asked.

“Now, we have to fill in what little we know. Jenny was killed in eighty-six,” Graeme said, marking the timeline. “Then, here, almost thirty years later, we have Sam Katsu, who uses the gun to kill Joe Alana. He was born five years after Jenny’s death. So, if the person who had it at that time had some connection to him, it definitely could be a father or uncle.”

“What we need to do is go through Katsu’s file. He had been arrested a lot of times, so there is a chance he ran across someone that has a connection to Jenny’s murder he wasn’t related to,” Adam said. “Like Del thought, there’s no way an ICE head like him would have held onto something like that. He would have sold it for drugs the first chance he got.”

“Then why did he use it to steal?” McGregor murmured.

“He might have thought he could go for a two-fer. You know, sell the gun after gaining some cash. He’d be able to buy even more drugs,” Adam said.

McGregor nodded. “ICE heads don’t always think clearly.”

“Your help was just brilliant, Adam. Thank your aunties for us again, please” Elle said.

He smiled. “It sounds so proper when you say aunties.”

She laughed. “I hope not too proper.”

Adam shook his head. “I’ll see myself out.”

“Thanks again,” Graeme said. “You definitely helped the haoles this time around.

Adam grabbed his helmet, and after giving them a salute, he left. She picked up Adam’s coffee cup and started to walk to the kitchen when she noticed that Graeme was watching her.

“What?”

He took his time in answering her. “I was just thinking that you fit here.”

She frowned. “This is my house. Of course I fit here.”

He shook his head. “I mean here, in Hawaii.”

“What?”

“I was thinking about it the other day too, when I found you sitting on the bench.”

“The day we got the case?”

He nodded without breaking eye contact. “You’re this gorgeous English rose surrounded by all the tropical beauty, and you shouldn’t fit. You should clash. But you don’t. Instead, you only enhance the beauty around you.”

Her breath caught in her throat. No one had ever said things like this to her, and they didn’t say it with Scottish sex dripping from every word.

“And I watch you with people. You’re good. And you enjoy them. Don’t ever doubt your skills beyond the lab, Elle.”

Again, he amazed her at how perceptive he was.
